When is the iPhone SE 2 coming out?
Originally, we expected an all new iPhone SE 2 to launch in March 2017, given that the original iPhone SE was announced in March 2016 and Apple usually updates its phone lines once a year. However, when Apple introduced a new Product RED iPhone 7 and a brand new iPad back in March 2017, the iPhone SE was only treated to a bump in storage to 32- and 128GB.
Then WWDC 2017 in June went by without the launch of a new iPhone SE, making us more uncertain about the phone's future. Instead, Apple used the event to show of iOS 11, MacOS High Sierra, a new iMac Pro, a new HomePod, and updates to its iPad Pro, MacBook and iMac ranges.
Further crushing our hopes for a refresh to the SE, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo then forecast that the iPhone SE 2 won't make an appearance in 2017 at all, on the principle that Apple doesn't want to cannibalise sales of the (higher-margin) iPhone 7. The SE 2, after all, would be a newer alternative at a lower price.
Analyst Pan Juitang has also suggested that there won't be a new iPhone SE. He wrote in July that Apple wouldn’t be updating the 4-inch handset ever. Claiming that there isn't enough demand for smaller devices as many consumers opt for larger displays for watching movies, playing games and browsing the web, and that the vast majority are accustomed to 5in (or bigger!) displays.
Four-inch fans don't despair! As of August reports are suggesting that the iPhone SE could see a refresh in early 2018.
A FocusTaiwan report suggests that the new iPhone SE will launch in the first quarter of 2018. Sources claim this new iPhone will be manufactured in India by a company called Wistron.
Apparently the new SE handset will launch in India prior to launching in other territories, which sounds dubious to us, although it might fit with Apple’s plans to offer a cheaper handset to certain territories (normally Apple does this by offering an older version of the iPhone to certain countries).
iPhone SE 2 Specs
According to the Tekz24 report (on which the FocusTiawan report was based), the new will offer an A10 chip (as seen in the iPhone 7), 2GB RAM, a 12MP camera, 5MP FaceTime camera, and 32GB or 128GB storage options.
The battery will also have a slightly raised rating from 1640mAh to 1700mAh.
The big news is that the new iPhone SE will have a screen measuring 4.2in rather than the current 4in. This will apparently be made possible by reducing the size of the bezels, although it appears that unlike the iPhone 8, which is rumoured to have a screen that stretches to the base of the phone - and thus no Home Button (read our iPhone 8 rumours here) - the current design incorporating the Home Button, will remain on the iPhone SE 2.
Apple iPhone SE 2 price
The iPhone SE is currently available in 32GB and 128GB versions. In the UK the 32GB model costs £379; the 128GB model costs £479. (For comparison, in the US the iPhone SE the phone costs $399 for the 32GB model and it's $449 for 129GB.)
We expect that the iPhone SE 2 will be similarly priced when it launches.
